Hammerdal was for a long time a spiritual centre for northern Jämtland. The name 'Hammerdal' is documented as early as the 14th century, spelled 'Hambradal'. Sometimes the place is referred to as "Utrikes Hammeral" ('Foreign Hammerdal'), a name that was probably coined in the Middle Ages.
There are many beautiful bathing places, great fishing waters, snowmobile trails, mires full of cloudberries and natural orchid landscapes (such as Vackermyren in Fyrås) in the area.
Hammerdal is completely free of tourist magnets with expensive admission fees. You can create your own vacation here. Peace and quiet in a caravan, your own moose safari by car, kayaking, cycling. It's entirely up to you. There are plenty of beautiful bathing places, great fishing waters, snowmobile trails, mires full of cloudberries and natural orchid landscapes hereabout. Just ask the locals and they'll direct you to all the hidden gems. Hembygdsgården (The Rural Community Centre) has a café that's open during the summer, where you can enjoy waffles or flatbread.
Hammerdal is a locality in Strömsunds Municipality in Jämtland County, situated next to the river Hammerdalssjön, approximately 30 kilometres south of the administrative centre Strömsund.
