The road is now closed for the season and will open again in the beginning of june.
Vildmarksvägen ('The Wilderness Road') is one of the highest roads in Sweden and runs through parts Jämtland and Lapland. The scenic route takes you through places such as the lake of Stora Blåsjön and the fantasic Stekenjokk plateau.
Starting in Strömsund, the first part of Vildmarksvägen goes from Ströms Vattudal to Gäddede. This part of the road is along many waters that attract fishing enthusiasts from all over the world. After a couple of hours drive from Strömsund you will get to the mighty waterfall Hällingsåfallet, Sweden's very own Grand Canyon. The waterfall plunges down a 45-metre tall cliff into the largest canyon in Sweden. Further north along the road you get to Korallgrottan, Sweden's longest underwater cave, where you can go on guided tours as well as in the nearby Bjurälven nature reserve which is home to Scandinavia's largest karst areas.
The most spectacular part of the Wilderness Road goes through the Stekenjokk plateau. This part of the road is only open from early June to mid-October due to the snow depth the rest of the year. You can even go skiing in this area under Midsummer's. On occasion, the snow depth has been up to six metres at the side of the road when it reopens in June. The Stekenjokk plateau is one of few areas where you have direct access to high mountain areas from the road.
The Wilderness Road runs through three municipalities covering an area the size of the county of Västra Götaland. There are only 22 000 inhabitants in this area, less than one per square kilometre.
Welcome to explore the Wilderness Road - which runs through a paradise for naturelovers and outdoor enthusiasts, or for people who just enjoy peace and quiet!

The Wilderness Road goes from Strömsund in northern Jämtland northwest over the spectacular mountain region Stekenjokk. From there the road goes straight into South Lapland to Vilhelmina and back south again towards Strömsund. A distance 500 kilometres in total. The road goes through some of the highest bear-populated areas in the country. You will encounter a region steeped in Sami culture, natural wonders and the northern Swedish hospitality.
Anyone looking for an adventure has endless possibilities along the Wilderness Road. There are plenty of smaller roads or hiking trails to explore, along which you may encounter wild animals among the many picturesque waterfalls and rivers.
